Scott Clark

Designer

San Luis Sustainability Group

Scott Clark, a straw bale construction expert, has been a member of the San Luis Sustainability Group (SLSG) for eight years. His focus within the group is on handling construction documents, obtaining permits, and construction supervision during the building process. He also is actively involved in sustainable architecture education.

Clark received a bachelor's degree in architecture from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. He became involved in passive solar design as an undergraduate student of SLSG principals Ken Haggard and Polly Cooper and has continued his research in the field.

A specialist in straw bale construction, Clark enjoys the versatile quality of this annually renewable material and cites the benefit people have with straw bale to get their hands dirty and become more involved in the building of their own homes. He has experience designing and detailing load-bearing walls and non-load-bearing straw bale structures as well as a variety of heavy and light timber-framed buildings.

Clark, along with SLSG principal Haggard, wrote the straw bale detail source book published by the California Straw Builders Association, a handbook for architects and builders on straw bale construction. He has been a member of the Sustainable Building Council of San Luis Obispo County since its inception.

Concerned with educating individuals on energy efficiency and a healthier building approach through passive solar and straw bale design, Clark has held numerous workshops and lectures in San Luis Obispo County and the San Francisco Bay Area. Scott also teaches a strawbale construction class at Cuesta, the local community college.
